Discover How Lavender Essential Oil Aromatherapy Can Relive Stress.

By Taruna Kisminti

The sense of smell is a primal sense which has evolved from the primitive chemical detection capabilities of earlier life forms. Studies have shown that humans can detect and recognize thousands of different smells. Smells and aromas can have a profound effect on all of us. Smells have the ability to change our health, mood and even our psychological well being. Aromatherapy is an alternative medicinal practice which uses the power of aromas to heal the body and mind.

The sense of smell resides in the olfactory region which connects to the limbic system. The limbic system is the seat of emotion which explains why certain smells brings back memories and even cause emotional outbursts in some people. Aromatherapy rejuvenates you by soothing your mind and body. You can enjoy scented baths and therapeutic massages at most spas or you can use scented salts and essential oils for a relaxing bubble bath at home. Lavender essential oil and frankincense essential oil are very popular choices.

Essential oils are aromatic organic compounds which are naturally produced by plants. Steam distillation is the standard technique used to extract essential oils from plant parts. These days synthetic variants are also available which mostly consist of a synthetic equivalent of the active ingredient present in the natural product. Essential oils are generally diluted with a carrier which is an odorless vegetable oil. Concentrated oils are classified as therapeutic grade but the term is used loosely.

Bergamot, Lemongrass, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Champaca, Clary Sage, Eucalyptus, Grapefruit, Immortelle, lavender and frankincense essential oils are some of the more popular oils. For example, Lemongrass oil is also great for treating depression. Similarly eucalyptus oil has been used for ages to keep away insects and mosquitoes. Essential oils have a number of uses, certain oils are useful for topical application whereas some are useful for treating respiratory problems.

Certain essential oils also have side effects like skin irritation, nausea etc. Test concentrated oils before applying as they can cause skin irritation. Toxins are also present in certain plant extracts, especially lemon and citrus oils. Eucalyptus oil is toxic if ingested and Lavender essential oil causes breast enlargement. To be on the safe side read the relevant literature before purchasing or using any essential oils.
