What Brings About A Vaginal Yeast Infection?

By Raymond Haymon

Medication, health conditions, and lifestyle factors can all affect a woman's risk of developing a yeast infection. However, this common vaginal infection is caused by yeast overgrowth.

Three out of every four women, will have at least one vaginal infection during their life span? Half of all women will have more than one. This type of vaginal infection is very common.

Yeast infections can occur in several places. The most common areas are the mouth, the infection is called thrush; on the feet, as athlete's foot; and on the genitals. When a yeast infection develops in a woman's vagina, it causes a type of vaginitis, or inflammation of the vagina.

We have yeast all over our bodies. It lives in harmony with bacteria. Physicians agree, when there is an imbalance in the routine flora, yeast can grow heavier. This causes what we know of as, a symptomatic yeast infection. Symptoms consist of itching, discharge, redness, burning and a distinct fishy smell.

Why do vaginal yeast infections develop? Our body is normally very good at amendable itself. It can maintain all the right chemical levels for good working order. Problems will pop up at times, that alter that chemistry. This throws some bodily functions off-balance.

The vagina on the inside, is somewhat acidic. This environment allows the right amount of yeast to live inside. However, when the environment shifts, the acidity level drops. Yeast grows. This increase causes the infection.

There are lifestyle contributors that have an effect on vaginal yeast infections. Dressed in tight underwear or synthetic fabric, that won't let the area "breathe" encourages yeast overgrowth.

Using over-the-counter feminine hygiene products, such as douches, scented sprays, and even bubble bath, may cause the acidity level in the vagina to drop, resulting in a yeast infection.

Being heavy can also contribute to yeast infections, in the vagina and in the folds of the genitalia area. Regularly taking in foods that are high in sugar, can produce an unbalance in the acidic level.

Some medical conditions can cause vaginal yeast infections. Many women get their first yeast infection, while pregnant. If they're on birth control pills, hormonal changes can contribute to the vagina's acid imbalance.

Diabetes patient? You may find that you live through frequent yeast infections. This is likely to transpire when your blood sugar is not well controlled. Illnesses that bring down your immunity, can also lead to frequent yeast infections.

Some medicines can cause vaginal yeast infections. Some antibiotics advance yeast overgrowth, by making the vaginal location less acidic, killing off normal genital bacteria.

Steroids can cause infection women. The higher the dose and the more you use them, the greater the risk. Even low-potency topical steroid creams, may make yeast infections more possible.

The good news about yeast infections is, they are usually treatable, with over-the-counter medication. If you think you have a vaginal yeast infection, speak with your doctor to discuss your treatment options.
