So, you have a newborn kitten that's adorably cute and completely vulnerable. However, the mother is nowhere in sight, baby kitten is crying, so how do you feed the newborn? Naturally, they have not yet grown the necessary teeth to crunch on hard food and still aren't quite ready for soft food. The first few weeks in a kitten's life are crucial for them to retain and maintain the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals for growth. So, you have decided to take on the role of momma cat. Congratulations!

First, make sure you have a few clean, (or sterilized), baby bottles and a clean towel. Fill your bottle with appropriate formula for your kitty. Most stores will sell a kitten milk replacement in the pet food Isle. The most popular brand is KMR. Make sure that you warm the bottle before feeding it to your kitten. To do this simply fill up a bowel with very hot water and place the bottle in the bowl for a few seconds. Then check the bottle on your forearm. It should be between 95 - 100F.

Now sit in a comfortable chair with your towel and kitten. Place the towel across your lap under the kitten. Place the kitten standing up or laying flat on its belly. Make sure your kitten is nice and warm before feeding as a feeding a cold kitten will cause a stomach ache later. Once your kitten is warm place the bottle in their mouth without raising their heads in the air. They should then start feeding and without letting them over eat they should continue until finished or full.

If you are having trouble getting your kitten to drink from the bottle first check the bottle's nipple to make sure the milk is coming out properly then place it back in the kitten's mouth. You might want to gently stroke the kittens head or back to kick start their feeding reflexes.

Most baby kittens are similar to baby humans in their need to be burped after a meal. To do this you must first hold your kitten with your hand underneath their chest and gently pat their back. Now you have full and burped kitten. Time for a nap!
