Baby Facts You Should Know

By Suzy Myerstein

It's a fair assumption that you already know some things about babies. Most people know that it takes babies a while to get to know someone. Most people already know that babies are able to identify their mothers right after they have been born. You've probably learned that babies develop at their own rate. Baby's do not follow a pre-set schedule for milestones. The fact is that most people do not quite grasp just how intricate a baby's development really is. Human development is fascinating but infancy is mesmerizing. So many things happen between conception and even early childhood. A baby's body might not look that complicated but it is an intrinsically complicated network of biology whose only goal is to keep developing!

Babies are always changing and surprising you! At least half the things you thought you knew about babies might not even be true at all! Read on to learn more about babies and early childhood development!

Did you know that some babies are born with teeth? Other babies don't start getting their teeth in until well after their first birthdays.

Most people think that babies do not learn how to smile until a few weeks after they are born. Smiling is often attributed to gas or the baby's having to go to the bathroom-at least until it reaches a few weeks in age. Nobody thought that smiling could be instinctual; instead it was widely regarded as learned behavior. Disapproval and unhappiness were thought to be easier for a baby to express than happiness. Now scientists have learned differently. As ultrasound technology advances, people are seeing their children smile while they are still in utero. Doctors are now able to give parents pictures of their children's' smiles weeks before the children are due to be born. Doctors now think that babies seem to "learn" how to smile because it takes them a few weeks to get over the trauma of having been birthed.

Most people believe that babies do not know how to smile before they are born. If a baby does smile before a certain point, most people think it is gas. For a long time it was common thought that smiling was a learned behavior-something that the baby learned from his or her parents over the first few weeks of life. It was widely believed that it was easier for a baby to learn how to express unhappiness than it was to learn how to express happiness. Now scientists have learned differently. Ultrasounds have gotten a lot better in recent years and prove that babies can smile before they are born. Many families have been given ultrasound pictures of their smiling children weeks before they are due to be born. Some scientists now believe that the reason babies take so long to "learn" to smile is because the birthing process is so traumatic for them. Babies are really fun to learn about. Nobody really knows exactly how they learn or how quickly they learn it. There is nothing like watching a baby grow from an infant into an adult-it is a fascinating and mind boggling process!
